Rates on home loans are extremely low, but they're not easy to get. Even borrowers with good credit have to jump through hoops to get approved for a loan.
In some cases, lenders are demanding extremely detailed information. They want to know about every penny that passes through your hands, and they'll cross-check inquiries on your credit history. If money (even a modest amount) was deposited to your bank account, they'll need to know where it came from and how long that money will keep coming.
Amy Hoak at Marketwatch.com describes how borrowers are facing "almost comical" questions from lenders. If you apply for a loan, expect the same. Get ready to respond to lender requests on things that are so basic and simple that you may have a hard time providing answers. Your lender is not necessarily incompetent -- it's just that everybody is still scared to lend money so they're doing a little extra homework before approving loans.
