Mobile payment systems allow you to make purchases and payments to your friends using your mobile phone. New mobile money platforms are launched with great hype, but they have not really taken off -- at least in the U.S.
The World Economic Forum's Mobile Financial Services Development Report notes that mobile money is most popular in the developing world, where bank accounts are not as common as mobile phones. In the U.S., most consumers have bank accounts and credit cards they can use to make payments.
Even if consumers in the U.S. wanted to do more with mobile devices, they might find that their options are limited. Mobile phones and retailers need to have certain technology installed, and that technology is not yet widespread.
